One of the major developments in the evolution of man was the starting of speech. When tens of thousands of years ago Neanderthal man started making specific sounds, it was not just random babbling, but the beginnings of speech, as we know it today. The importance of speech can be gauged from the fact that human beings are the only animals in the world that can speak to communicate, and this has contributed greatly in the evolution of man. Along with the evolution of speech came stories, real and fictional. These stores talked about the moon, the sun and the stars. Fictional characters like the abominable ape-man, and real ones like the saber toothed tiger and the mammoths of old held the attention of generations. Most stories, however, died with the storyteller – there was no way to record them for future generations. Man had learned how to speak, but sadly, not to write. Things continued in this way for quite some time, unfortunately.

Another thing humans loved was music. Everyone perceived music in his or her own unique way- someone would like the beats, another would prefer the beats, resulting in distortions in different productions of the same music. As humans developed and writing of stories started, music also begged to be written. If stories could be written, so could music. This found its expression in the creation of sheet music – the reduction of the music to paper to retain its specific flavor. This recording of the music would remove the chances of aberration in the quality of the music as it gets passed down the generations. Recording the music on paper gives it a permanence of sorts– the instrument can vary but the music remains the same.

Writing music is easy if you know how – but having said that, creation of good music is much harder than creation of fiction or prose. Just count the number of famous musicians you know v/s the list of famous authors, and you’ll understand what I am trying to say here.

Sheet music looks very simple and unassuming - a collection of interesting characters on a white page. For those who do not understand it, it is just funny looking markings on a page that can be interpreted only by those who love instruments. But for someone who understands it, magic can be created out of those musical characters. Change a note here and a chord there, and you have a different tune altogether. The classics that have staying power are renowned as works of art and can really lift your spirits. Listen to Mozart, Beethoven or Liszt to understand this – several generations have heard their music and generations after us will. Thanks to Sheet Music, we will always continue to enjoy these masterpieces of art in their original beauty.
