Music lyrics do the same to a song as words do to a book. Its not the bindings or print of a book that takes it from merely paper to a work of art and the same is true of music lyrics. However, over the past couple of decades the art of good music lyric writing has fallen short. Writers now seem to simply roll our whatever over-used imagery they can immediately think of. With a youth audience so desensitized by television and current events, perhaps writers are beginning to run out of ideas that wow! Money, fame and cars have all been tragically over done in music lyrics. That said, just once in a while a writer will come from nowhere and stir or move us with their powerful music lyrics. When a writer writes the music and the lyrics to a song that makes it even more magical. When these writers come along they are hailed as the fresh-faced ‘new thing’ and then the, shall we say, ‘Hollywood complex’ kicks in and they stop trying. The material becomes boring, mundane and hollow and the music lyrics uninspiring. Why continue to shine when you’ve already made it? That’s when the best are only good and the good are just that. A horrible celestial status quo. We don’t want music lyrics that bore and bemuse, we want lyrics that inspire and intrigue. We hold their fame at our mercy and its time these lyricists realized it! Our buying power has the capacity to elevate them or send them crashing into the ‘has beens’.
