It was once a popular saying that video killed the radio star, a saying that was probably true after all. What the saying doesn’t bring out, however, is that Music videos are nothing but stretching of the music world to a little beyond what was represented by a purely music album. Music videos are hugely popular, sometimes as much as some cult film, and sometimes even more. Any performer worth the name from Frank Sinatra to Joan Jett has a video to his credit, it is no longer adequate to just sing lyrics. The visuals serve in bringing a strong meaning to the lyrics – even narrating a small story akin to a miniature movie that tells a full story in a small song’s time frame. Music videos transport us for a few minutes into a surreal and fantastic world – directors work hard to fit a small story into the sequence of the song. You shouldn’t be surprised to learn, then, that a Television station was created purely for the purpose of playing music videos.

Music videos are a breath of fresh air in a world filled with bad news. Turn on a music channel to be transported into the musical world of the seventies and eighties; a time when life was not so complicated and the current world problems were nowhere in sight. But whether music videos transport a person into a land of fantasy or not is not the moot question here.

The fact of the matter is that we really like music videos and enjoy it from the bottom of our hearts. We enjoy the stories built around our favorite rock stars and singers, and the fact that each video and singer will always be unique. And another place they are good at is that there will never be any poor sequels to spoil the memories of the original – unlike several movies and their flop sequels. As an art form, music videos are right up there, and have progressed greatly over the past twenty years; an evolvement that can be compared to that achieved by movies in as many as sixty years. Just like music stars, video stars are very popular, and downloads of their video music are just as popular as downloads of songs.
