Music notes are the atoms of music. For centuries music notes have been regarded as a gift from the creator so that mankind can show its creativity. Notes are arranged in scales, the most popular of which is the diatonic scale. The diatonic scale has seven notes. The highest note is C, and the lowest is B. The whole scale looks like that: C-D-E-F-G-A-B. In addition to the diatonic scale, there are several other scales, the most notable of which is the chromatic scale, which has 12 notes. Mankind has been analyzing notes for centuries, trying to discover their mathematical properties. For instance, there are compositions, which are written using the golden ratio (1.6180339887) and the Fibonacci numbers (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55...), which is a recurring sequence of numbers from algebra. The Physics Department of the Michigan Technological University has even succeeded to break down the tones of a note into mathematical formulas.

f0 = the frequency of one fixed note. This fixed note must be defined and commonly this involves setting the A above middle C (A4) at f0 = 440 Hz.
n = the number of half steps away from the fixed note you are. n is positive, if you are at a higher note and it is negative, when you are on a lower note.
fn = the frequency of the note n half steps away.
a = (2)1/12 = the twelfth root of 2 = the number which when multiplied by itself 12 times equals 2 = 1.059463094359...

The formula to derive the wavelength of the sound for the notes is as follows:
Wn = c/fn
where W is the wavelength and c is the speed of sound. The speed of sound depends on temperature, but is approximately 345 m/s at "room temperature."
