Pomp Circumstance Music is a series of five marches for orchestra composed by Sir Edward Elgar in the beginning of the 20th century. Amongst them his best work remains the Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1, premiered at Liverpool in October 1901, but with its success Elgar composed three more, performed in 1905, 1907 and 1930.
Elgar conducted four recorded performances of Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 and this theme was played by some 30-odd musicians from various London orchestras, recruited for the session by The Gramophone Company, dubbed as the Symphony Orchestra.
12 November 1931 was the day when Elgar performed the trio with the London Symphony Orchestra for the opening of EMI’s Abbey Road studios. Thereafter Pomp Circumstance Music grew in importance and people began to hear it regularly. In fact March No. 1 became so popular that today it is simply known as “the graduation song”, and is regularly played at all graduation ceremonies.
